Let Your Light Shine

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." W. E. B. Du Bois

Character of Christ

Nephi was commanded by the Lord to keep a record of the people, which began what eventually became the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi 19:1–4). Nephi recorded “sacred things” in the hope “that perhaps [he] might persuade them that they would remember the Lord their Redeemer” (1 Nephi 19:5, 18). Everyone should record the sacred events in their lives. Although I don't have any such records of my ancestors, I've read journal accounts of pioneers that crossed the plains. I've read of their great sacrifices and the strength of their testimonies. These are inspiring.

During His mortal ministry, Jesus wasn't well received 1 Nephi 19:7–10. I wonder which side of the fence I would have been on in those days. I suppose the difference in those that accepted him and those that didn't was the state of their souls 1 Nephi 19:9. Because He loved us,  Jesus endured all 1 Nephi 19:9. The sad part in all this is the history of the Jews, since they put Jesus to death 1 Nephi 19:13–14. But He is waiting with His arms stretched out still to receive them, when they see the errors of their ways  1 Nephi 19:15–16.

It was good that the family had the plates of brass, which contained the Old Testament. When we study and learn of  “the prophets of old” and “the doings of the Lord in other lands, among people of old,” we will be blessed 1 Nephi 19:21–22. Additionally, it is important to “liken all scriptures unto us” that we may learn from the experiences of others that we may adopt the character of Christ 1 Nephi 19:23.
