despise not the revelations of God

Basically, the scriptures are bound volumes of God's words to prophets and other chosen people for the benefit of man. "And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation." Doctrine and Covenants 68:4

While I and many other people love the scriptures, not everyone feels that way. The "Natural Man" keeps them from understanding or appreciating God's Word, because the natural man is an "enemy to God." Meaning a person caught up in worldliness, either will not or cannot understand the things of God or feel the Holy Spirit.

Says Paul, "But the NATURAL MAN receiveth no the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:14

Satan is master at luring us into the security of our own wisdom instead of relying on faith and inspiration. This reliance on one's own wisdom makes those of faith seem foolish.God knows all about this problem.

"Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God." Jacob 4:8

Only God can whisper the truth of His mysteries to the natural man. Only then can he discover the ways of the Lord. Really, though there is nothing mysterious about the methods God outlined for us to receive revelation. Sometimes we receive dreams. Other times friends or leaders make His words clear. The Light of Christ, which everyone on this earth possesses from birth, teaches us right vs. wrong, truth vs. lie, and so on. The Holy Ghost, a special gift, and is one who whispers truth and warnings. For me and most people, we hear his voice through reading His Word. Pressing questions are are answered through studying, pondering, and praying. This presents a problem to those who will not accept all scripture from all the Nations of Abraham and Israel. Take care to "despise not the revelations of God."
