I decided I'm going to have to keep my herbal and other study notes separate. There is just too much stuff each week for one post. This week blogger dumped yesterday's herbal study notes. Aaarrrggghhhhh! So to guard against a reoccurrance of that frustration, I'll make two shorter page per week. Tada! Isn't this great!
Herb Energetics-Module 1-Herbal energetics uses human senses, especially touch, taste, and smell, to learn the properties and actions of an herb. This idea intrigues me, because God made each plant on earth for a specific reason besides adding beauty and variety to the earth. He planned things into His creation to help His children survive. Some of these things include plants that heal various maladies, but we must learn to listen to the language and core nature of the plant. Energetics has contributed to herbal medicine in every traditional system: Chinese five elements, Ayurveda six tastes, Appalachian blood diagnostics, and Western Galenic four humors. Because of the length of time these principles have been utilized and the wideness of their use through thousands of years, we can safely say energetics is theoretical and practical. I'm excited about the potential of learning these principles for the health of those with whom I work.
The School of Natural Healing
Constipation, malnutrition, and inactivity are the three main causes of the diseased conditions discussed in Chapter One. Comfrey and Almond are herba useful in the treatment and subsequent cure of chronic bronchial inflammation. Additionally, pay attention to constipation, clear mucus and relax throat, stomach, and bronchi with emetic like lobelia. Cayenne, citrus, and pineapple to clear phlegm. Chickweed, comfrey, mullein, marshmallow to clean out mucus. Use hot and cold water therapy and a fomentation of pleurisy root or mullein with lobelia and maybe a bit of cayenne to speed things up.
The causes of deterioration of the bowel and the steps necessary to restore natural bowel action include improper diet, fast eating, and stress can cause this problem. Lower Bowel herbs, exercising, mucusless (plant based) diet, and drinking lots of water are the cure. Additionally, many of the ingredients in a plate of curry can alleviate constipation: cayenne, ginger, asafetida, and coriander. If you make your curry with olive oil instead of ghee and include high-fiber, soaked, low-heated lentils, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and spinach, and eat it over soaked, low-heated brown rice, you have a tasty way to heal your pipes. And eat some fennel seeds, when you are done, as is the customary digestion aide in India.
Purgatives and laxatives (when used unwisely) contributing factors to chronic toxemia, beche body absorbs liquid fecal matter by intestinal villi.
It is necessary to know the cause of a convulsion before administering aid to administer the proper remedy.
A cyst is an over growth of cells or foreign fluid in an organ or body cavity that is enclosed by a membrane. Herbs that can break up a cyst include: walnut herbs, chaparral, apple cider vinegar, cayenne, honey, yellow dock, mullein, and plantain to name a few.
Dropsy is edema caused from diabetes and heavy salt eating. Parsley, parsley root, chaparral, juniper and of course a little ginger have shown to successfully reverse this problem if proper diet, hydrotherapy, and lower bowel formula are utilized.
Fevers are nature’s way of burning out toxins and is often a necessary step in eliminating morbid matter from the system. It thins out the crude and poisons.
Insect bites and constipation are some causes of hives. To never get or never get them again, clean up the bowel.
The health of stroke victims be improved with cayenne and cleansing herbs
Alterative herbs act on Secretory organs in order to purify the blood stream. It is necessary to know which organ is at fault in a disease when using alteratives.Plantain is the best healing agent in cases of blood poisoning. To extract the poisons from a poisonous insect sting, bruise the leaves to make a poultice. Keep moist. Change before it dries.
Red clover is an excellent alterative herb to add to a formula in the treatment of skin diseases, cell-deterioration (cancer), and bronchitis.
Burdock root is valuable in an alterative formula for action upon blood, skin, kidneys, and lymph. Boils are an outward manifestation of constipation of the entire organism but more specifically the blood stream. Chaparral a valuable, quick-acting, alterative herb. Why is Oregon grape root used in the formula for syphilis, because specific for the genito-urinary tract. Sassafras destroys certain undesirable protozoa in the blood stream, is an antidote for poisoning by acid or alkaline corrosives, and is often used to cover the disagreeable taste of bitter herbs in a formula. Sarsaparilla contains the valuable phyto-steroids for the hormones testosterone, progesterone, and cortin, in addition to organic sulphur. Echinacea in poultices corrects auto-infections, when the body is not effectively eliminating toxins and is effective used in the treatment of boils and carbuncles. Dock herbs contain a high percentage of organic iron within the roots, while the leaves have antiscorbutic properties. As an alterative herb, garlic kills infections while stimulating friendly bacteria and is especially specific to the respiratory and intestinal tracts.
The three most common types of parasitic worms found in the afflicted body are Thread, round, tape.Vermifuge=expel Vermicide=destroy Male fern, mandrake, jalap, broom pine, pomegranate, and Jerusalem Oak are the most effective against the tapeworm.
An astringent herb promotes greater density and firmness of tissues. To use bayberry bark as an effective remedy for nasal adenoid blow the powdered herb up the nose. Herbal Composition Powder is used in the beginning of disease, for relaxation, prevention, removing obstructions, and relieving pain in the stomach and bowels. White oak bark has many uses some of which are hemorrhage, vermifuge, diuretic, removes gall and kidney stones, and cleansing alimentary tract. Red raspberry leaf excellent before, during, and after pregnancy, because it tones the uterus and relieves constipation. The most effective astringent herb one can use where there is a chronic, debilitating, and copious mucous discharge is cranesbill. Bistort is one of the most powerful astringents in botanic medicine, because it cleanses canker and toxic matter from the alimentary canal. while toning it. White pond lily, an, astringent herb contains mucilage, which is as soothing to the mucous membrane lining as it is toning to the tissues. Tormentil and casgara segrada, two astringent herbs, are known for their nervine properties.
Both organic and the inorganic cathartics act to hasten intestinal evacuations. However, inorganics irritate and dehydrate sensitive organs, while organics strengthen and tone malfunctioning tissues and organs.
Aperients excite moderate peristalsis and produce normal stool formation without griping or irritations (fruit, water, licorice root, olive oil)--should be administered at night. Cathartic herbs cause active peristalsis, stimulate glandular secretions of the intestines, produce semi-fluid bowel movements with possible griping or irritation--should be administered in the morning before meals on an empty stomach. Chologogues stimulate flow and discharge of bile. For a partially atrophied colon, mandrake or culver’s root are indicated. According to Dr. Shook, the best and safest laxative is Cascara Segrada.
Black Walnut tree has many uses besides providing nourishing walnuts: anti-microbial, cathartic, anti-fungal, nutritive, and anti-inflammatory. The husk contains iodine, potassium iodine, potassium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and silica.
Turkey rhubarb is an excellent laxative for children, because of the milk-like quality of its actions.Turkey rhubarb, senna, and licorice are the preferred herbs, when constipation is accompanied by hemorrhoids. The griping and nauseating effect of senna can be lessened by the use of cloves, ginger, cinnamon, coriander, or fennel. One must avoid overdosing, when administering mandrake, because it possibly can cause convulsions and coma.
The diaphoretic herbs produce sweating in three ways. They enter the circulation and are thrown off by sweat glands; they stimulate the local nerve fibers to these glands to increase action. They influence the peripheral sensory nerves, which relax and dilate the superficial capillaries and vessels. They stimulate the sweat glands indirectly by stimulating the cells in the central nervous system from which the nerve fibers controlling the actions of the sweat glands originate. When administering diaphoretics think of a hot herbal bath in conjunction with hot internal diaphoretics. Afterward use friction with a brisk towel down and then a deep message. Cathartics should not be given just before or during administration of diaphoretics. Diaphoretics are one of the most important of all herb groups, because they clean foul, mucus conditions from the body. If yarrow, one of the most effective diaphoretics was unavailable, one could use chamomile, pleurisy root, boneset, thyme, blessed thistle, hyssop, sage, catnip, or spearmint.Chamomile is used hot as a diaphoretic. When used cold, it relieves uterine congestion and stimulates menstrual flow. The flowers of chamomile, and really all herbs, should be covered during preparation and never boiled, because the volatile oils containing the therapeutic values will escape. A powerful, capillary-relaxing herb which is valuable for all chest complaints is pleurisy root.
Thyme, a common diaphoretic, nervine, and culinary herb, forms the basis for Listerine Compound, and may be relied upon to eliminate infection, destroy worms, remove foul odors, and tone the respiratory system. A warm infusion of sage will produce perspiration, while a cold infusion will treat night sweats. Catnip, a diaphoretic and nervine herb, is most widely used to allay colic and restlessness in babies. Spearmint, a diaphoretic herb, can alone alleviate the nausea of pregnancy, and is used in a formula especially for that purpose: spearmint, cloves, cinnamon, and turkey rhubarb for such.
Gravel root, a diuretic herb that influences the excretion of solid materials, is used with demulcent agents to soothe irritation and forestall any stress that may arise during the elimination process. Often, the cause of bed-wetting (enuresis) is nerve damage and psychosomatic. It can be treated with gravel root or uva ursi and parents refraining from harassing or spanking children. Some of the wonders parsley has been known to work include: removes gall stones, heals adrenal glands, therapeutic to nervous system, tonic for circulatory system, reduces swollen glands, eliminates edema, treats all ailments of the urinary tract, helps anemia, high blood pressure, and arthritis, and eliminates halitosis. Juniper should be administered in smaller doses in the treatment of renal dropsy, because the stimulating effect may irritate the urinary passages. Some of the herbs that can be compatibly combined with Juniper in the treatment of urinary complaints include cleavers, tansy, cayenne, shavegrass, oat straw, and black current leaves. Possible, damage to the delicate urinary tissues is the danger of cleansing the chronically clogged urinary tract too rapidly through an overdosage of diuretics. The garden carrot, a powerful cleanser, is rich in the minerals potassium, sodium, and calcium. Dr. Loretta Foote was instrumental in popularizing the healing properties of the underestimated carrot. Cleavers, diaphoretic herb, is contraindicated in diabetes or kidney weakness.
In menstrual abnormalities it is necessary to know the cause before administering herbal aids, because it cannot be cured without knowing the cause. The causes of leucorrhea are many and varied; they include: fungal infections, sexually transmitted diseases, polyps, unhygienic behavior, stress, tuberculosis, and anemia. An herbal program to eliminate the condition might include injecting an infusion of or wearing a tampon soaked in equal parts white pond lily, red raspberry leaf, comfrey, and witch hazel. Squaw vine, an emmenagogue, is a legacy from American Indian who held it in high esteem as a uterine tonic to be taken during pregnancy.Tonsils should remain in the body, because they are a valuable organ. They are the last refinery organ that guards the reproductive organs from toxins in the body. Removing tonsils reduces fertility, and sets the stage for problems of the ovaries and prostate. In retarded menstruation due to a sudden chill or cold, the herb Penny Royal is indicated. When taken as a warm infusion in connection with a vapor bath, it is almost a specific cure. It should be avoided during pregnancy, because it can cause irritation in the genitourinary tract and may possibly cause reflex uterine movements.
Cramp Bark, an emmenagogue herb. is helpful in the prevention of unnecessary abortions (miscarriages). The herb is also a stimulative tonic to the uterus and when properly applied can regenerate the female protective organs.
Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium, Phosphorus, Potash, Calcium, Iron, and Silicon are all mineral elements are contained in the emmenagogue herb blue cohosh. Three Therapeutic Actions of the emmenagogue herb, rue, are anti-spasmotic, tonic, emetic. Mother Wort, an emmenagogue, is a well-known cardiac tonic.Southern Wood, an emmenagogue, is also indicated in swellings and inflammatory states.
Constipation and mucus is caused by a nutritional shortage of potassium chloride in an unhealthy body. When potassium chloride is not readily available in the body, the body obtains them from any other source containing them such as potassium phosphate (robbing nerves) or calcium chloride (robbing the heart muscle.
Expectorants act upon the bronchi-pulmonary membrane. The results of a good expectorant are altering the quality and increasing the quantity of its secretions and facilitating discharge of the fluid or semi-fluid mucus from the trachea or bronchi through coughing and spitting.
Demulcents soothe, soften, and allay irritation of mucus membranes. Comfrey is used in bronchitis and the burn paste formula, because it is demulcent and also emollient.
Mullein, a demulcent herb, is a well-known for its action upon the glandular system, its soothing effect upon the nerves, and its use in promoting the absorption of escaped fluids (such as in rupture). Some of the conditions which indicate the use of chickweed as a healing agent are pulmonary complaints, internal or external inflammation of the membranes or skin, weakness of the stomach and bowels, especially bleeding or the bowels or lungs, wounds, skin irritations and itching, and inflamed surfaces.
Marshmallow can effectively be used against gangrene by soaking the affected area in its decoction. Slippery Elm, a demulcent herb, can be used as a nutritive substance as well as a medicinal aid in the case of malnutrition complicated by ulcers, inflammatory conditions of the lungs, stomach, or intestines.
The function of the sodium phosphate found in the herb Inula helenium is to clean the liver and digestive organs. Horehound and wild cherry are two expectorant herbs that have appeared in commercial preparations for decades, because they are soothing expectorants. Licorice, a demulcent and laxative herb, contains the phtyo-steroid precursor for the hormone estrogen.
Samuel Thompson’s was famous for promoting the herb Lobelia during the 1800s. An emetic is a substance that will induce vomiting. Lobelia’s antispasmodic action upon the human organism is described as an immediate relaxation and expansion of any contracted part of the respiratory system, allowing oxygenated blood to flow freely to the tissues. In the instance of a threatened miscarriage, Lobelia will cause a dead fetus to abort or if the fetus is healthy allow the mother to carry it to term. Lobelia was labeled as a poison in the American Dispensatory, because of the jealousy of allopaths. Lobelia is administered in the instance of lockjaw with the herbs skullcap, skunk cabbage, gum myrrh, black cohosh and cayenne and pouring between the cheeks and gums of the patient. The best solvent for extracting the medicinal properties of Lobelia is apple cider vinegar. The companion herbs that should be administered along with Lobelia as a general rule are ginger, a relaxant, or peppermint or cayenne, emetics. Lobelia is indicated in the case of chronic asthma, because it relaxes the lungs while at the same time force the emitting of mucus old and new that clog air passages. Lobelia is best stored is tincture form.
The nervous system is compared to an electrical wire network in a city. We can keep these “wires” in proper repair with healthy eating and exercising habits, never using nerve stimulating or sedative drugs or substances, avoiding worry, avoiding excesses in all forms, and getting proper rest. A nervine is a nerve tonic, feeding, strengthening, regulating, and rehabilitating nerve cells, while an antispasmodic prevent or relieve excessive contractions (spasms) of the voluntary or involuntary muscles of any part of the body. Scullcap, a nervine, influences the spinal cord. To be of permanent benefit and best results, it must be used over a long period of time. Valerian and black cohosh, two nervines, are indicated in cases of cardiac palpitation, because they slow the action of the heart while increasing the heart force. Lady’s slipper is an almost pure nervine and effective in most nerve disorders. Mistletoe is indicated in cardiac dropsy because of its tonic effects, and can be used instead of digitalis or bromides. Wood Betony is indicated specifically in headache. Cramp bark and wild yam are valuable herbs to use during pregnancy, because they quiet and relieve abdominal and uterine cramping. The attributes of hops are nervine (sedative), tonic, anodyne, cholagogue, diuretic, stimulant, anthelmintic, stomachic, febrifuge, aperient, alterative, feeble hypnotic, diaphoretic, astringent, aphrodisiac. Hopsalso dissolve calculi.
Stimulant herbs quicken, excite, and increase nervous sensibility, thereby stimulating energy in the body and enhancing its function. Cayenne is our purest stimulant. Some of cayenne’s uses as an herbal aid are feeding the cellular structure of the circulatory system, equalizing blood pressure, stimulatining the peristaltic motion of the intestines, and heals ulcers of the intestinal tract. Ginger is a “carrier” herb which accentuates many other herbs in the lower abdominal and colon areas. Ginger can be used to provide relief to the patient, because it accentuates herbs for abdomen and colon, calms muscle spasms, relieves gas, and draws boils. Jamaica Ginger is most effective as a stimulant herb. ,The therapeutic action of Mentha piperita also known as Peppermint, is a nerve tonic that promotes relaxation and sleep, and soothes nervousness and restlessness. Peppermint is used in the flu, fever, and inflammation remedy along with elder flower, because it breaks down congestion, equalizes circulation, and restores functional equilibrium.
Clove is the most powerful of the aromatic and carminative herbs; For a toothache, rub oil of clove and peppermint along the gum and tooth. To prepare fresh Cochleria armoracia or horseradish, finely grate in and mix with a bit of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. It is dangerous to heat or boil black pepper, because doing so changes the molecular structure into a kidney irritant. Prickly Ash is slower-acting, but more permanent in effect than cayenne, and will remove obstructions in every part of the body.
During convalescence or any rundown condition is the point of an illness should the tonic herbs be employed. Use barberry in a formula that corrects Jaundice, because it corrects liver secretions and causes bile to flow more freely. Golden Seal, the wide-spectrum tonic herb that is often indicated in the treatment of chronic alcoholism, is also useful for debilitation of the mucous membranes and gonorrhea. Peruvian Bark contains quinine, which is most dangerous to use in the isolated or extracted form in the laboratory, but is safe to use in its natural form in an infusion, etc. White Poplar is an effective (and possibly superior) substitute for Peruvian Bark, and can be found in North America.
A cold infusion of Blessed Thistle, Red Raspberry Leaves, and Marshmallow Root can be used to insure a plentiful supply of Mother’s milk. Myrrh is used specifically for diseased mucous surfaces, increases the circulation up to four times the number of white corpuscles, and is a powerful disinfectant. Balmony is used specifically for the left lobe of the liver. The herb gentian contains condensed oxygen in the roots, which enables it to impart exhilarating tonic action and bitter taste to the user. Gentian is a unique tonic to the liver, because it tones this organ without influencing the secretion of bile.
You should gather your own herbs, because you are assured of freshness, purity, and potency. Wild herbs have greater potency, because they grow in selected habitats suitable to their characteristics. Annuals live one season and reproduce by making seeds. Perennials are somewhat permanent and bear fruit for many years before dying. A biennial is a sort of cross between annual and perennial, because they build a root system one year and bloom the next; they don’t live after blooming. Herbs gathered in moist or rainy periods are generally weaker and spoil quicker. The correct time to gather aromatics is in the cool of the morning after the dew has evaporated or in the evening before the dew has appeared. The leaves of a plant should be gathered as soon as fully matured, before flowering or after fruiting. The best preservation methods to use for long-range storage are liquid extract, tincture, or syrup. Aluminum ware should not be used in the preparation of herbal agents (or anything else), because it releases poisons into preparations.
An herbal bolus is an internal poultice. A decoction is herbal roots slowly simmered in water and strained. An infusion is made from pouring hot water over herbal leaves of flowers. A fomentation is made, when a cloth is immersed in a decoction or infusion and wrapped on the outside of the body. To prepare the oil of an herb, pour 1 pt. pure olive oil over 1 lb. preferred herb in double boiler and simmer (125-150F) for an hour. An herbal tincture by infusing 4 oz. dried herbs in 1 pt. grain alcohol or apple cider vinegar for 6 weeks.
Nervines are administered along with antihydropics to help relax the urethra. Hard water, eggs, salt, and dairy products contribute to the formation of stones in the body. A cell-proliferant accentuates cell growth. Colonics are an unsatisfactory method of cleansing the colon, because they are a crutch which eventually weakens the system. Enemas should be used only in emergency. They should be administered cool for best results. Nasal spray is made with decoction or infusion in an atomizer. The most convenient procedure for administering herbal aids is orally. A cold bath following a hot bath is a beneficial procedure, because it closes the pores. Lotions are often detrimental to the skin, because they obstruct the pores.
We can rid the body of static electricity by walking barefoot in the grass 10-15 min. per day.In the extended herbal cleanse, we use the combinations for elimination for at least one week before adding the blood cleansing combination so the toxins have somewhere to go.
To heal the pancreas, golden seal, uva ursi, cayenne, cedar berries, licorice root, and mullien, can be used by both those who are hypo- and hyperglycemic. The patient can enhance the actions of the herbs in the formula by using the 6 on 1 off idea, staying on the mucusless diet, and eliminating all unnatural sugars, pastries, and other junk foods.
Horse tail converts to silica and the other herbs in the formula work in harmony with it. It is needed to build nerve sheaths, vein and artery walls, bones, teeth, etc. Additionally, any time one experiences cramping or Charlie horses it is called for. Therefore, it is needed at all times that sufficient, organic, dietary calcium is not available.
When mucoidal matter forms a hard lining in the bowel, the peristaltic action is inhibited.
The uremic acid content in meat related to gout, rheumatism, and bursitis, because it deposits in and around joints as uriate of sodium. Uremic acid is the most difficult part of an animal for the human body to eliminate once having ingested it. Some of the difficulties caused by the ingestion of cow’s milk by humans after the time of weaning are: it is mucus-forming and depletes organic calcium while depositing inorganic calcium. You eat eggs, because they are the most mucus forming foods of all; the protein is too concentrated, and they are highly constipating. Wheatgrass contains the healing element, LIFE. The 7.4 PH of wheatgrass is beneficial to man, because it is identical to healthy human blood.
It is unadvisable to embark immediately upon a long fast with no intake of liquids or juices, because the body needs to open the channels of elimination first. The virtues of fruit and vegetable juices are many. 1) They immediately absorb (partly.) 2) supply energy without overworking the body 3) similar to a transfusion of nutrition (p. 619-620)
Green Pharmacy: The History and Evolution of Western Herbal Medicine
Animal matter, metals, minerals, and insect are a few examples of some non-herbal treatments used in ancient times.
Diocles, a student of Aristotle wrote an early list of herbs and their usage around the 4th century BC. Craetus, personal physician to Mythridates VI Eupator, King of Pontus wrote a similar herbal in the 1st century BC. The herb agrimony (Agrimonius eupatoria) may have been named for this Greek king. We mostly know his work through Pliny (I'm really going to have to read Pliny, since he talks about bees as well.) Dioscorides: from Anazarba in Asia Minor, traveled as doctor to the Roman armies of Nero and wrote the famed De Materia Medica, the prototype fo herbals and pharmacopoeia. Galen, from Pargamom in Asia Minor, traveled to Alexandria to study and stayed on as a physician. A great surgeon to the gladiators, he eventually became personal physician to Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, and other such as he until 200AD. Because his theories came about close to the collapse of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Dark Ages, his rigid ideas stagnated medicine for 1,500 years. Hippocrates, developed a framework similar to Egypt, India, China, and Greece of the four humors: earth, wind, fire, and water, which corresponded to the chief fluids of the body. The properities of the herbhs corresponded to two or three of the humors: moist, hot, cool, dry. Also, the idea fo balancing physical, emotional, and mental health along with the humors was developed.
:Local healers, druids, and monks carried on herbal knowledge during the Dark Ages. Clean air, moderate diet, rest, work, emotional states, and the evacuations of superfluities were the innovative methods used by Ibn Butlan. The Arab formulatires excelled in the preparation of herbal concoctions, including purges, cathartics, and laxatives. During the Dark Ages and especially during the black plague the lady of the manor was relied upon to treat the household and the village poor.
Physicians and alchemists developed a preparation of mercury to treat syphilis. A few of the many dreadful side effects of murcury poisoning are stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, suppression of urine, bad breath, tremors, blindness, deafness, paralysis, loss of jaw and facial tissue, and death. Doctores tried and then gave up on many herbal cures to treat syphilis because they didn't work fast enough. Soem of the herbs the used include: guiaiacum, tobacco, sassafras, jalap, china root, and sarsaparilla.
Paracelsus gained his knowledge of healing from is alchemist/physician father, Trimentius, and years as an army surgeon. Paracelsus' disdained the herbals published in his time. Paracelsus believed as many so called natural healers do today, that "The specific medicinal action of a plant depends on a single chemical constituent--the active principle of the plant." True natural healers believe in using the whole plant and not some chemical derivative, because the whole plant, the way God planted it, is usually safe. Chemical constituents often are not. Although Paracelsus is credited as being the father of chemical medicine, he expressed disdain for its practice. He abhorred the practice of using medicine for profit at the expense of the patient's pocket book and health.
