“In forsaking the great principle of modesty, society has paid a price in the violation of a greater but related principle—that of chastity. The purveyors of the concept of irresponsible sexual relations that degrade and brutalize the participants have grossly masqueraded and completely missed the purpose of these divine gifts” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1981, 8; or Ensign, May 1981, 9).This is something that I did not truly understand until I had teen daughters. I wanted my children covered up, because the Church made a big deal about modesty. It wasn't until I understood how men might be seeing my lovely, chaste daughters that it all made sense.
It is not right to show 'just a bit of cleavage' or wear tight things--it is degrading to men and women alike. Because Satan does not have a body, he wants to use our bodies as a way to pull us down with him. It is not only modesty and chastity that he uses as weapons. This talk by David Bednar was particularly eye opening to me on this point. Our bodies are temples and should be cared for as such.
Thank you for posting this. I think I'll use that talk for FHE next week! I agree with you on the tightness of dresses. I had issue with a few young women leaders recently because of the tight dresses they are wearing. They argue that the dresses cover up their garments and so they are modest. I don't agree because they are so tight it leaves little to the imagination.
ReplyDeleteI watched the talk by Elder Bednar last night. It was something I really needed to hear.
