Paradigm Shift

“The list of health problems I think it would very hard to live with is SO much longer than the list of foods I previously thought I couldn’t live without,” Merrill Alley.

OK, so I lied.

Mostly I like being an empty-nester, but this is too much. A couple days ago, Spencer had a little accident--he jammed a needle up his big toe and broke it off. We've been texting and calling about what should be done. Mind you this is exam week.

Finally, he agreed to go to the student health center. He called while there to get a bit of info. He called after he got home to tell me about it. Anyway--he said that they gave him an appointment for the next day for a podiatrist to come operate on his toe. He said the needle was possibly embedded in the bone. Not good.

A Podiatrist! Are you kidding! I'm not even sure they are real doctors. Don't their degrees come in Cracker Jack boxes? And they want one of these jokers cutting on my kid. Like any hysterical mother, I called to demand my rights. Now I have a glimpse into what socialized medicine will be like.

Certainly, he can go to an orthopedic surgeon--but it won't be covered by student health insurance. Absolutely, he can get pain meds--but he'll have to find a way to get to an emergency room. Since the doctor wrote nothing about it in his chart notes and they don't call their doctors after 5:00, to bad so sad for him.

OK, we're used to having the best insurance available and choose whatever doctor we want. I have never liked being told what to do. So what are we to do while our son is in Provo, and we are in Seattle? Submit to the skills and wisdom of a pseudo doctor and a clinic doctor on a power trip!

Can you tell I'm passionate about my children. They are my life. Now I'm supposed to trust in an HMO to care for this young man, whom I've hauled all over the country to get well. Maybe the sooner I don't have to know about his medical care the better.

  1. A podiatrist is a real doctor (a four year doctoral program plus a three year residency), no worries there. Personally,I'm worried that when socialized medicine comes along we won't be able to see any of the "alternative" doctors! ;o) But, BYU is about as close to socialized medicine as you can get. When I was pregnant with my first and throwing my guts up, the (ancient)Dr. there told me to get a job and get my mind off feeling yucky! Unfortunately I was already working AND going to school, so that obviously wasn't the issue.

  2. I won't even tell you what the OB at the BYU clinic told me at my "pre-marital" exam. And the first time I toolk my baby there, I was told to put cortisone cream on his very, very, very bad baby acne (no really, I have never seen worse in my life) by the dermotologist that the on call doctors made me see (I had brought him in for a head cold). A few days later, the pediatrician freaked out on me, being very mad that they told me to put that on a 1 month old baby. Luckily, I never felt right about using it, so I didn't. Oh, the drama.

Reading the scriptures and keeping this journal are my delight. I do not keep an online journal to preach to anyone but myself. I like this format, because I can add pictures and correct my writing easier. If you enjoy reading it, I am happy. If you feel offended, please, realize it is not my intention to offend but to teach myself. No negative comments will not be published.
