To summarize, the sons of Lehi and Zoram married Ishmael’s daughters. It is not good for man to be alone.
The purpose of the “Liahona” Alma 37:38 was a spiritual and literal compass 1 Nephi 16:10, 29. In order for the Liahona to work, the family needed to exercise faith and diligence 1 Nephi 16:28–29; Alma 37:40. When they were unfaithful and disobedient, it ceased to work Alma 37:41–42.
Likening this to my life, my scriptures are like the Liahona and work according to the faith and diligence I give them Alma 37:38–46. Additionally, the Holy Ghost, teachings of modern prophets, and my conscience have helped guide me.
“The Lord gave to … every person, a conscience which tells him everytime he starts to go on the wrong path. He is always told if he is listening; but people can, of course, become so used to hearing the messages that they ignore them until finally they do not register anymore. You must realize that you have something like the compass, like the Liahona, in your own system. Every child is given it. … If he ignores the Liahona that he has in his own makeup, he eventually may not have it whispering to him. … Our ship will not get on the wrong course … if we listen to the dictates of our own Liahona, which we call the conscience” (Spencer W. Kimball, Ensign, Nov. 1976, 79).
When Nephi broke his bow, the family suffered for want of food. Complaining and murmuring against the Lord, the people prolong their suffering 1 Nephi 16:18, 20. Again Nephi's diligence is the reason the Lord blesses the people 1 Nephi 16:22–23. Making a new bow and humbly asking his father's advise, Nephi helped his father humble himself and turn to the Lord 1 Nephi 16:26–32. This change of attitude allowed the Liahona to point the way so Nephi might obtain food for the family. Trusting in the Lord, working diligently to overcome the challenges, and refusing to complain against the Lord and His servants, we emulate Nephi.
“...by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by verysmall means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.” Alma 37:6–7
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Galatians 6:9.
I seen that this is true, when the smallest change in attitude or choice to be happy allows me to pull myself up by the bootstraps and move forward. Having experienced this principle, I know I can change the course of a day by not allowing myself to grow weary or give in to despair but to be diligent and faithful.
