In the 1980s, a popular movie showed how Yeshiva students were taught to sight the author of their argument, which apparently was a long tradition. Jesus rarely sighted authority. When He did, He suggested or stated His words were of the Father who sent Him. Usually, though, He said, nothing or something like, 'I say unto you.' Moreover, those fortunate enough to hear His words for themselves felt their power.
One need not be in His physical presence to feel the power of His word. Blessed are we that His apostles wrote them down. The more I study them, the more I know they are true. I'll ever be grateful to be born at a time and place where I'm free to read scripture any time I want without fear of retribution. True, many these days are openly hostile to Christians, but for now I still have religious freedom. I would never usurp the religious rights of another, and I invite all with any inkling of interest to experiment upon the word and find out.
"Now, as I said concerning faith—that it was not a perfect knowledge—even so it is with my words. Ye cannot know of their surety at first, unto perfection, any more than faith is a perfect knowledge. But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words," Alma 32:26-27.
"Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things," Moroni 10:3-5.

"Men are prone to judge their fellows and to praise or censure without due consideration of fact or circumstance...Have the centuries between the days of Christ and our own time made us less eager to cure the defective vision of those who cannot or will not assume our point of view, and see things as we see them?...The spirit of the address [Sermon on the Mount] is throughout that of sincerity and action, as opposed to empty profession and neglect. In the closing sentences the Lord showed the uselessness of hearing alone, as contrasted with the efficacy of doing," James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ.
Recently, I've come a bit closer to understanding the idea of judging not. It's not as if we are to condone behavior contrary to the law of God. No, however, we must love all men as brothers and neighbors even when their actions don't seem proper. Nobody on earth can change the laws of God to suit the whims of society. BUT...we also don't destroy or persecute people for their different points of view as some persuasions demand. We let God do the judging, while doing all we can to protect against anarchy/violence/theft/vice/murder/etc. The thing is, we don't know what heart or head baggage a person carries that influenced their actions. They may be at a different place on the path, counting on us to help them along OR there to help us along. I think of my grandmother, who's had her share of misfortune but is by far the most charitable person I've ever met. She doesn't judge or try to force her ideals but is anxiously engaged in loving others as her good cause and invitation to her ideals.

I'm so grateful for the instructions found in the Lord's Prayer. Worship, Gratitude, Supplication, Forgiveness, Repentance, Submissiveness, Deliverance, and Acknowledgement before the Father uplifts the petitioner, beggar, applicant. My new prayer journal helps me focus my attention so my prayers don't become random day dreams. In turn, focusing helps me feel my Father's love more fully. Still I am far from the righteousness of the poor widow, who gave all her might. Mostly, I tend to be more like the unmerciful and unprofitable servants, but I'm working on it.

Jesus wanted His followers to rise to the higher law. Certainly, penalties for the sins murder, fornication, adultery, theft, and so forth were and are still in effect, however, Jesus taught overcoming the emotions that lead up to such sins: anger, lust, greed, grudges, etc. He even went so far to teach us to suffer rather than commit wrongs. While the old retribution of an eye for an eye was tolerated before His ministry, the old Levitical teachings (Lev. 19) to be holy, live righteously, love your neighbor, and keep the commandments were emphasized and even magnified. Jesus taught us to forget ourselves and serve others even to the extent of praying for our enemies.
Oh, how I fail at times to keep anger in check, to forgive, to dismiss grudges. I repent and do well and fail and feel just awful. When will I get to the point that this weakness becomes my strength?

salt and pride
Chapter 17 of Jesus the Christ continued...

The idea of salt in these passages are many fold. First, salt was a symbol of the covenant between Jehovah and Israel. Also, salt in that area of the world has impurities in it that cause the saltiness to evaporate. While the substance that remains looks like salt, it has little flavor or savor. This represents the self-righteous religious hierarchy of the era. They appeared to be followers of God, but they had lost the spirit of worship only embracing the outward appearance. Insincerity said Jesus, would cause calamity and "in no case [allow anyone to] enter into the kingdom of heaven."
That leads to the question, am I sincere or self-righteous. That old pride is an easy sin into which everyone can slip. We have the truth don't we? That is likely what the Pharisees thought. Yes, truth can set you free, however, skewed vision blinds us to how we let pride twist it. I should guard against pride...but how is this done? Every day without fail, pray with true faith, study God's word, attempt to live according to the Word, repent often, listen to inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and allow Jesus to light the inner light...but doesn't that sound like a Pharisee-ish checklist? That's the problem. Do these things with a singleness of heart, a willingness to follow God's will, and an eye on the kingdom to come.

opening my eyes to joy
Chapter 17 Jesus the Christ continued...

Some rewards come in this life and some in the next. Either way living according to Jesus' example brings joy. After watching a few people partake of worldly pleasures and shout the fun of it all, I've watched their lives crash down with terrible consequences. Because of this observation, I'm happy I made the choice to follow Jesus. No, I can't say I've done perfectly or even reasonably well at being His disciple. Nevertheless, I would rather take my consequences over those that imbibe and so forth. For the most part, I'm pretty happy.
"As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full," John 15:9-11.
When I was in the throws of raising children, those busy, busy times, I was too busy to count my blessings. I lamented, 'Where is all the joy?' As the trials of middle age reached their zenith, I was forced to fold or fight. My choice was to fight futility by immersing myself in gospel study. During the time since then, I've learned how to see and count blessings and miracles, opening my eyes to joy.

Jesus chose His apostles of devoted disciples. Not one of them was perfect but men striving to do right and follow Jesus. At the beginning of their calling, their constance in the presence of Jesus allowed the Master to teach and guide them. Sometimes He had to rebuke one or another of them for they were mere children in the gospel--Jesus even called them children from time to time.
With the exception of one, they rose to full stature as apostles or 'ones sent by God.' Under special instructions of the Savior and with full authority of the Holy Priesthood, they spread the gospel throughout the area traveling amazing distances for the time. Even then they were just men striving to do their best.
Paul illustrated this when he said. "...lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

I knew Judas Iscariot sold Jesus to His enemies. However, I wasn't aware that he was a thief as well. Apparently, he was the treasurer or holder of the purse for Jesus and the Twelve, and a stingy treasurer at that. John called him a thief, while Matthew and Mark were less forward about that point. It seems even though Jesus saw a spark of greatness in the man, Judas couldn't rise above the natural man.
Likening this scripture to myself, my question must be: can I let my spark of greatness shine forth to build the kingdom of God (and myself), or will I allow my human nature to drag me down? Which will it be selfishness or service, grudges or forgiveness, kindness or meanness, humility or pride, faith or fear?

quiet workers
Chapter 16 of Jesus the Christ continued...

Simon and Judas (not Iscariot) are mentioned very little. Jesus loves and can use in His ministry the quiet and un-famous. When I wonder if my little service in His kingdom will matter, these men help me realize it will. Just because no fanfare announces me doesn't mean my service isn't important to Jesus. Quiet workers matter.
"But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth," Matthew 6:3.

Chapter 16 of Jesus the Christ continued. It's not a long chapter but there are lots of categories with 12 apostles.
Apparently, biblical scholars aren't too sure if there were two or three men named James in the Bible. One was Jesus' cousin, another Jesus' brother, and another the brother of John. The puzzlement occurs because some say the cousin and the brother are the same man. I'm no scholar, and it doesn't really matter. Suffice it to say, at least two men named James were apostles to Jesus Christ.

Epistle of James
Reading the Epistle of James, I am reminded of so many things. Most compelling at this time, the admonition that faith without works is dead reminds me to do good to all men. This is not easy somethings, but perhaps, nothing worth doing is really easy. James tells me that I can faithfully praise Jesus' name all day long, but if I don't act in His name, I fail.

the test
Jesus the Christ Chapter 16 continued...Learning about each apostle is interesting and inspiring, although someone following my posts might not believe I think this. Distraction is more the issue than diligence. Yesterday, I started unpacking a box. Before I knew it, the day was done and my devotions were slim. Certainly, I listened to a couple sermons while cleaning the kitchen and did a few other devotional things. However, I didn't sit down, devotedly study, and write in this journal as I should, nor did I do so the day before. In this middle of the night, I realized my lack so am up early to make sure this important activity takes priority.

Thomas loved Jesus and His teachings, however T didn't seem to understand the big picture. Years ago the term Doubting Thomas was still in use. I'm not convinced that Thomas doubted but more that he lacked comprehension. Thomas could see the worth of the Savior during His earthly ministry but didn't grasp the full significance of Jesus Mission. Willing to be martyred along with Jesus, Thomas showed his love and support as well as his misunderstanding of Jesus' divinity. Lacking in faith of the testimonies of his brethren, he would not believe without personal physical confirmation. Thomas' experience gave Jesus a perfect vehicle for a lesson concerning faith. "...because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed," John 20:29.
So the question is do I faithfully believe the words and will of Christ, or do I rely on personal physical confirmations like Thomas? Certainly, I believe in the Son, Jesus Christ, God, the Eternal Father, and the Holy Ghost. However, I do enjoy the testimony that miracles and blessings bring. What does that say about me? Well, I'm grateful for miracles and blessings, counting them all during daily prayer. Still, I do believe as well as try to ascertain and live by God's will for my life. But...distractions sometimes (often) pull me away from the path I know I should travel. That must be the test.

sweet medicine
Matthew 10:3...entirety of Matthew
Humble Matthew was called to follow Jesus before the official call to the apostleship. When Matthew, a despised publican, prepared a feast for Jesus, self-righteous Pharisees pointed out that Jesus would rather eat with a tax collector than them. They could not understand Jesus at all. Jesus said, "I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Maybe Matthew's feast included those in need of special teaching and ministration of the Master. Matthew couldn't be included in this designation although the scribes and pharisees might have believed that was Jesus' meaning. Either way the Great Physician didn't need to hang around those that thought they needed no ministration but those who received His healing.
This is true today. Many arrogant or misguided people hold themselves apart from Jesus' healing word and ways. We seek out those willing to listen. Some of the others may come around. Some may not. Nobody can be forced into His discipleship now any more than they could have been back in the day. The Great Physician heals only those willing to partake of His sweet medicine.

Character of Jesus
Moving a bit slowly this morning. Jet lag and travel fatigue have hit. Additionally, I worked on pruning our severely overgrown grapefruit tree yesterday for three hours. A dwarf tree over ten feet tall, a return to dwarfishness will take some effort. I reduced the height by 1/3 but all the growth is on the outer two feet. I'm not at all sure how to bring it back into balance without cutting off all the green. Maybe by capping it and opening up the center, as I did, new growth will occur closer to the trunk. If not I'll prune even more and graft buds closer in. My goal is to graft in Oro Blanco, Marsh Seedless, and Rio Red Ruby for succession ripening on this grapefruit as well as succession varieties on the lemon, tangerine, and orange in the yard. Hopefully, I won't kill it, since the unknown winter ripening pink grapefruit are so delicious. Either way the grapefruit looks as terrible as I feel.

Some scholars, including the author of Jesus the Christ, believe Bartholomew and Nathaniel are the same man. Maybe one of the names is the surname. Whatever the case, to be thought of by Jesus in this light is wonderful indeed. Without guile and full of faith, one is closer to the character of Jesus than nearly any other attribute. Sincerity, faithfulness, and forthrightness in character bring to mind The Redcross Knight of Faerie Queen fame.

spiritually short sighted
Jesus the Christ Chapter 16, continued...
John 1:43-45

Philip was the first called apostle of Jesus and bore testimony of Jesus as Messiah. However, other instances, where Philip was mentioned, show him short sighted. Jesus worked with Philip and tested him, as He does with each of us. Will we anticipate Jesus' miracles in our lives? Will we know Him when He is in our midst? Or will we be spiritually short sighted like Philip? I hope that won't be my way.
If that is the hope, what must I do? The scriptures are the owner's manual. Pray fervently and without ceasing. Repent of my sins and plead for His helping hand with my weaknesses. Feast upon the word's of Christ. Love Jesus by keeping His commandments. Count my blessings and acknowledge His hand in all things. Accept His atoning grace and allow faith in Him to guide my life. Love my neighbor. Most of all, love the Lord with all my mind, might, and spirit. Maybe then, I'll pass the test, trust Him, and anticipate miracles. Maybe then, He won't ask, 'Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me.'

Not a lot is written about Andrew. Between the lines, we see he was the sort that was always there. He wasn't afraid to share the gospel with his family. Namely, his brother, Peter began following Jesus because of his witness. When Jesus uttered His famous follow me and I'll make you fishers of men, Andrew was among those thus called. Sometimes the quiet ones do much in the service of God without any notice or fanfare, but God sees their works and sacrifices.
"When thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly," Matthew 6:3-4.

James and John were zealous and renamed Sons of Thunder by Jesus. James seems to have been the quieter brother, while John was Jesus best friend. Over the years, I've had close friends from time to time, only one I venture to call beloved. A best friend is someone whom you can count on as Jesus did, when He charged John to care for his mother. I wonder if anyone feels they can count on me this way. Am I a true friend? I'd like to think so, but I'm probably more of a hermit than I should be. My grandmother has many friends, because she is accepting and loving of everyone. Before she became old and dependent, she was one that people could count on. I want to grow up to be like John and my grandma.

I loved serving a mission, but mine had a definite end date. My sacrifice was small, compared to the likes of wealthy Peter, who left his prosperous fishing business to live in the service of Jesus. It is heartening to note that Peter was just a man with faults and frailties. I too can be of some use in spite of mine.

called to serve

I've been called to many positions of service all involving teaching of some sort. When I think of it, all these callings were from Jesus. True, as a woman, I thankfully won't be called to be an apostle. However, the Holy Ghost whispers the way we should go if we will but listen. Sometimes callings are immeasurably fulfilling but sometimes they are simply difficult learning experiences. In a minute way, this mirrors the experiences of the apostles called to preach during Jesus' time, fulfilling but difficult. So far, I haven't been in danger during a calling unless you count my injury from driving a tractor at the farm. However, painful as it was, it's nothing like being stoned or put to death. I'm grateful that these little tidbits were included in scripture to encourage anyone who seeks a religious life of any magnitude.
