walk in the light

My daughter, Emily, was endowed and married here. I've often visited the grounds and temple. For many reasons it holds a sweet place in my heart.

The Salt Lake Temple fulfills part of Isaiah’s prophecy recorded in 2 Nephi 12:2–3. Because Ancient prophets often went up into the mountains to commune with the Lord and receive revelation from Him, Isaiah described the temple as “the mountain of the Lord.” Temples are “mountains” for worship, since they teach us of His ways, how to walk in His paths, and more about His law. It is so exciting to be part of the fulfilling of the prophesy. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been established in the tops of the mountains, because temples are being built where people can go and learn about the Lord.

As Isaiah said and I have found, temples are a “place of refuge” from heat and storms 2 Nephi 14:6. There are many physical and spiritual storms in this life and temples help protect us from these storms. No other place on earth provides this place of peace and rest, this place of safety and refuge. It's a bit of heaven on earth.

When we watch and learn, fellowship instead of feud, and worship instead of warring, we help establish the kingdom of God on earth 2 Nephi 12:3–5; D&C 133:7–14. As members of the house of Jacob, we are instructed to walk in the light of the Lord instead of “all [going] astray, every one to his wicked ways” 2 Nephi 12:5. Specifically, worshiping riches and idols, not acknowledging God, and being prideful are not walking in the light of the Lord  2 Nephi 12:7–12. Staying close to God through prayer, feasting upon the scriptures, following His commandments and developing a Christ-like character, we are better equipped to avoid these pitfalls, fall into wicked ways, and walk in the light.
