Although Jarom was faithful, he wrote little. He didn't think it necessary to record the prophecies and revelations he had received Jarom 1:1–2. Some of the people of Jarom's time were turning away from the Lord. Because they had hard hearts, deaf ears, blind minds, and stiff necks, they could not feel the promptings of the Spirit Jarom 1:3–4.
Because not all had turned from the Lord and many practiced much faith, they prosperd in the land and overcame the Lamanites Jarom 1:5, 7–12. Because the prophets, priests, and teachers taught the gospel diligently by example and word, the Nephites were reminded continually to live the gospel Jarom 1:11–12. It is so important to attend church and read the words of the prophets and Church leaders so hearts can be pricked by their words. It is so easy in this confusing world to turn away from faith, making attendance and attention so important in preserving faith and reminding believers of the commandments.
During Jarom's time, Nephite leaders persuaded the people to “look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was,” Jarom 1:11; Mosiah 3:13. Even though the Messiah has come, we ought to follow this counsel and prepare for the Savior’s Second Coming. I am grateful for these few words of Jarom. When I am diligent with scripture study, prayer, and attending my meetings, I feel joy in my heart, peace in my soul, and strong in my faith. When I turn from these things even briefly, I fail in my relations with my family, feel anxiety, and feel despair. I prefer the former.
