a little history

lands of Nephi and Zarahemla

Because of major disagreements with his older brothers and because the Lord commanded it, Nephi fled with whomever would go with him after his father, Lehi’s, death. After traveling for many days they found a choice land and settled, calling the new place the land of Nephi 2 Nephi 5:5–8. Years later the inhabitants changed the name of their land to “the land of Lehi-Nephi” Mosiah 7:1.

Four centuries later the people of Nephi or the Nephites had a king named Mosiah. Again, the Lord commanded the Nephites to flee with “as many as would hearken unto the voice of the Lord.” Mosiah and his people found a new heavily populated land called Zarahemla. The people of Zarahemla and the people of Nephi joined forces and appointed Mosiah king Omni 1:12–19.

More years passed. Some Nephites returned to Lehi-Nephi Omni 1:27. Zeniff, their king, worked out a deal where they obtained land for their inheritance Mosiah 9:1–7.

The the grandson of the first King Mosiah, who was also named Mosiah and king of the people, “was desirous to know concerning the people who went to dwell in the land of Lehi-Nephi.” When Ammon proposed to lead an expedition for this purpose, King Mosiah II agreed.  After some time, Ammon's expedition was successful, when the found the land of Lehi-Nephi. The king of the land was King Limhi,  Zeniff’s grandson Mosiah 7:1–11.
