After Jesus' original Twelve Apostles died, the people of the church were without the priesthood to lead them and thus interpreted the scriptures without it in a manner pleasing to them. "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." 2 Timothy 4:3-4
As false doctrine crept in, the Church fell into Apostasy. It is vital to learn pure truths of the restored gospel so as not to be led astray and lost. Words of the prophets, scriptures both ancient and modern, is the place to start. "And he commanded them that they should teach nothing save it were the things which he had taught, and which had been spoken by the mouth of the holy prophets." Mosiah 18:19
True doctrine, understood, will touch our hearts, change our attitudes, and influence our behavior. Last weekend God's prophet and other leaders preached His word to all the world over the modern inventions of television, radio, and internet. "And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the word, or anything else, which had happened unto them—therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God." Alma 31:5
"And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" Luke 24:32
Finally, if we pray for guidance, the Holy Ghost will whisper truth.
"And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." Moroni 10:5
