Let Your Light Shine

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." W. E. B. Du Bois

The Choice to be Grateful

Henry B. Eyring wrote a beautiful article about counting blessings, The Choice to be Grateful. My project joy is along this line, but he gave me plenty to think about and a challenge. "Let’s not just talk about counting our blessings—let’s do it! Write a list of 100 things you are thankful for—10 physical abilities, material possessions, living people, deceased people, things about nature, things about today, places on earth, modern inventions, foods, things about the gospel. Making a list like this, we discover that a list of 100 doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of all the things God has given us."

By focusing on blessings, we can be so happy on earth despite trials.

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."1 Thessalonians 5:18

"And ye must give thanks unto God in the Spirit for whatsoever blessing ye are blessed with." Doctrine and Covenants 46:32

As a younger person, I didn't understand these commandments. Now I know that everything we are commanded to do is for our benefit. How can giving thanks to God be for our benefit? It allows us to focus on what is good and right about our lives instead of wallowing in misery. God gives us commandments, because He loves us and knows what will bring us joy.
