healing balm of Gilead

Mosiah 4:1–12 After King Benjamin taught his people about the mission of the Savior, they fell to the earth because of their carnal natures Mosiah 4:1–2.) Although we are beloved of God, people are nothing and less than the dust of the earth without the atonement of Christ Helaman 12:4–8; Moses 1:9–10.) In teaching his people, King Benjamin emphasized their “nothingness” and unworthiness. He wanted them to recognize their dependence upon Jesus Mosiah 4:5–8, 11–12. This idea of dependence upon the Lord essential for all people to recognize. It is only then that we can choose to accept and act upon Jesus invitation to come unto Him.

After King Benjamin's people recognized their “carnal state,” they embraced the atonement of Jesus and were forgiven of their sins (See Mosiah 4:2-3.) “If the time comes when you have done all that you can to repent of your sins … and have made amends and restitution to the best of your ability … , then you will want that confirming answer as to whether or not the Lord has accepted of you. In your soul-searching, if you seek for and you find that peace of conscience, by that token you may know that the Lord has accepted of your repentance” (Harold B. Lee, Stand Ye in Holy Places [1974], 185).

King Benjamin taught that remission of our sins is obtained through faith and forsaking them Mosiah 4:9–10. King Benjamin’s words about forgiveness and remission gives me great hope. Sometimes I am discouraged by my weaknesses and past choices. However, when I remember to give Jesus a place in my life, strive to humble myself, and seek to repent continually, I feel peace about the past. I know I've done my level best to make amends and restitution. Jesus accepts this and grants me the healing balm of Gilead.
