Mosiah 1 The book of Mosiah contains the teachings of King Benjamin. Before getting into an account of his reign, he speaks about his teachings as a father Mosiah 1:2–8. King Benjamin understood his first priority was his family. Like Lehi, Nephi, and other prophets before him, King Benjamin taught his sons his sons Egyptian so they could read the Old Testament on the Brass Plates. He taught them what the revelations contained in the scriptures meant and to have faith Mosiah 1:2–7. Because the Nephites could study the scriptures, they retained a knowledge of God, the commandments, and right living. The Lamanites, who did not have scriptures, followed incorrect traditions of their fathers and dwindled in unbelief Mosiah 1:5.) This difference is reflected in modern society. When people feast upon the words of Christ, they develop a love for God and all things holy. Like King Benjamin, parents can help their children develop a love for the scriptures by modeling it and acting in accordance of what is found in its pages. They can do like King Benjamin and make the scriptures an intragal part of home life.
King Benjamin “gave [Mosiah, his son,] charge concerning the records … on the plates of brass” Mosiah 1:16. In every age, the Lord commands his prophets, seers, and revelators to see that the scriptures are “preserved in safety” (D&C 42:56). It is important that the scriptures be “preserved in safety,” because the people of the earth need to understand God's ways, will, and commandments Mosiah 1:3–5.
