the greatest event in history

Holy Week is the time we commemorate the greatest event in the entire history of the Earth, the atoning sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Last night I attended the baptism and confirmation of a sweet, little, 8-year-old girl, whose parents brought her from far away Africa to be part of their forever family. It was a wonderful sight to see two rows filled with children, who sit reverently and whose faces shone with gospel light.

One of they hymns this large, beautiful family picked to celebrate the event was Come, All Whose Souls Are Lighted. As we sang the words, I could tell why it had special meaning to them. God loves all His Children and wants them all to take advantage of Jesus' gift. This little girl was a great example that anyone can follow if they choose: faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, and the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Come, all whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high.
Shall we, to men benighted,
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation! Oh, salvation!
The joyful sound proclaim,
Till earth’s remotest nation
Has learned Messiah’s name.

From Greenland’s icy mountains,
From India’s coral strand,
Where Afric’s sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand,
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver
Their land from error’s chain.

Go tell, ye winds, his story,
And mighty waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,
It spreads from pole to pole;
Till o’er our ransomed nature
The Lamb, for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator
In bliss returns to reign.
