“The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever,” Isaiah 32:17.
"...if ye are prepared ye shall not fear," Doctrine and Covenants 38:30.
Because humans kept their first estate, remained loyal to Heavenly Father, and received a body, we have power over those that did not. They only way they can lead us into captivity is with our permission.
"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall," Helaman 5:9.
We can choose Christ's redeeming love and liberty or Satan's agonizing captivity.
"That every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency which I have given unto him, that every man may be accountable for his own sins in the day of judgment." Doctrine and Covenants 101:78

The permissiveness afforded by the weakening of the laws of the land to tolerate legalized acts of immorality does not reduce the serious spiritual consequence that is the result of the violation of God’s law of chastity.All are born with the Light of Christ, a guiding influence which permits each person to recognize right from wrong. “For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.” Moroni 7:16
I'm grateful that my Heavenly Father gave me parents that instilled a knowledge of God and further grateful that this led me to Jesus' gospel. Jesus lives and is the only way back to the presence of the Father, which is where I want to be.
