Matthew 2
“There came from unnamed eastern lands…an unspecified number of wise men. Whether they were two, three, or twenty in number is a matter of pure speculation…It appears from Matthew’s account…that…the wise men came two or three years after the birth of our Lord. It was a ‘young child,’ not a baby, they were seeking; he was found in a ‘house,’ not a manger; and Herod ‘sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under.” Bruce R. The wise men were actually prophets on a divine errand to worship the ‘Messiah of the Jews’ or anointed one. Herod didn’t like this at all and demanded that his chief priests and scribes, Jewish religious leaders, tell him where Christ was born. Because they were learned religious men, they knew the Old Testament prophecy found in Micah 5:2 that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. The translation of Bethlehem is house of bread, and Jesus is the bread of life.

The gifts the Wise Men brought were valuable in two ways. First, they symbolized royalty, priesthood, and death. Gold, the most precious of metals, was found in abundance in royal houses. The High Priest used frankincense in temple worship, while Myrrh was a part of the anointing of the dead. The resin drops of frankincense, produced from the milky sap tapped from the Boswellia tree, are also used as a precious healing balms in traditional Asian medicine for digestion and healthy skin as well as traditional Indian medicine for treating arthritis, healing wounds, strengthening the female hormone system, purifying the air, and strengthening the immune system. Some of these claims have been researched modernly and upheld by scientifically. As with these two resins, gold was of great monetary value.

Obedient and good Joseph listened to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost and whisked Jesus away to Egypt to keep Him safe. Upon returning to home with Joseph and His mother, Mary, Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy found in Hosea 11:1. Trying to kill the Messiah, Herod committed a terrible infanticide throughout Bethlehem and the nearby coast, killing all children aged 2 and under. Joseph’s swift and wise actions saved Jesus’ life. Herod’s actions fulfilled the Old Testament Prophecy found in Jeremiah 31:15.
