With the little children of the Primary, we have a short group lesson, singing time, and class time. On any given week a child might recite memorized scripture, pray orally, learn deep but simple doctrine, or give a talk (sermon). As I try to become familiar with my calling and the lessons presented befor I began, I continue to be amazed.
In January, the children were taught a simple truth that perplexes those with a victim mentality. "Because I have free agency, I am responsible for my choices." Choices have consequences good and bad. Choices affect those we love and our communities, good or bad. The song taught that day was, Choose the Right. Choose the right, when the choice is placed before you. In the right, the Holy Spirit guides. And it's light is forever shining over you, when in the right your heart confides. Choose the right! Choose the right! Let wisdom mark the way before. In its light choose the right! And God will bless you ever more. Choose the right! Let no spirit of digression, overcome you in the evil hour. There's a right and a wrong to every question. Be safe through inspiration's power. Choose the right! There I'd peace in righteous doing. Choose the right! There's safety for the soul. Choose the right in all labors you're pursuing. Let God and heaven be your goal.
Those of the victim school want to look at a person's past to explain and excuse poor behavior. However, many people with horrendous trials have overcome and become good, productive people. We choose our reaction and continued actions; even if it is difficult. Yes, even a little child of three can grasp this on some level.
"For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for everything which inviteth to do good , and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny Him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is od the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves to him." Moroni 7:16-17
